I live in a society that never reacts Never wakes up to unmistakable facts It's like there's a fever or spell in the air And it gets into our heads so we never prepare Why do we never stay? We're rushing back to the cradle What an unfortunate fate Like we're a part of a fable I live in a society that'll never relax I know it's not a virtue but there's no going back In my dreams there's a warmth and a song in the air But that place is in my head so we'll never go there Why do we never stay? We're rushing back to the cradle What an unfortunate grave With drowning eyes we're unable But if I saw your face I would always be sorry I couldn't save you or stop stars from falling I recognise your eyes The drawing shadow on your smile and you're calling For a place you can build your home Where nobody will drop a bomb on your child Take away your dreams Why do you wish that on me? I live in a society that never relents Never forgives and never repents If you think that it's better to shelter or care You should never close your eyes to this kind of despair Well I can hear their voices calling out For something that'll never occur Can't you see they're building a storm on the water? Can't you see they're building the walls out there? Why do we never stay? We're rushing back to the cradle What an unfortunate grace With drowning eyes we're unable If I saw your face I would always be sorry I couldn't save you or stop stars from falling I recognise your eyes The drawing shadow on your smile and you're calling If I saw your face I would always be sorry I couldn't save you or stop stars from falling I recognise your eyes The drawing shadow on your smile and you're calling Recognise your eyes The drawing shadow on your smile and you're calling

You can be the winner And you can be the best You can speak the truth to me I see it in your eyes, mate I know you're going to say some stupid lie Are the sucking our country dry In a cold black wave come from over the sea It's so obvious if you can think and feel How many would die Just to try to take the crumbs from me And just keep chipping away at their mortality Am I proud to watch you sink? Well everyone agrees that they find you So innocent and sweet, I do believe I believe that deep inside There's an anger I don't understand You close your eyes To a sea of lost humanity Every day you tell a lie You believe each word in every headline Well I can read the papers just as clear as you And I distinctly recall my fears run deep Every time I have to pass a gang in the street I'm telling you Lee, when I see their faces I can barely explain Where their motivations lie Well if our cliffs are white And our fields are green and gold And our faces are white, so white and proud man And when I'm cut down in the street it's all I can do To make my country proud and accept the truth I'm not proud of you Well everyone agrees that they find you So innocent and sweet, I do believe I believe that deep inside There's an anger I don't understand You close your eyes To a sea of lost humanity Every day you tell a lie You believe each word in every headline You can make it matter That the papers are liars If your trust has a price You should spend it better

Been living in the shadows of the world Every line I cross brings retribution Everyone I know has left this place Every day I walk down empty streets And think about a time when we were safe Think about a place I've never been to Think about the roads that I could take Read about a world with no confusion Now do you feel yourself collapsing again Like rubble in the desert winds Torn loose, ashes blown overseas To a land you'll never get to? Let's tell another lie Begin another story I'd leave my life behind in search of some unlikely glory Did you imagine I just need a place to hide away? Been living in a bubble of a world Money on the table friends to turn to Saying "we're the ones who hold sway on you" Crying at your walls we might never get through And can you see yourself starting again In a place that doesn't care for you So when they laugh you can't reciprocate? Let's tell another lie Begin another story I'd leave my life behind in search of some unlikely glory Did you imagine I just need a place to hide away? I am yearning for my home but it's broken You are such a fool A soft entitled fool To judge me like you do I've seen so much more than you The world is a desert The people fade to grey Deceived by the horizon We stray Let's tell another lie Begin another story I'd leave my life behind in search of some unlikely glory Did you imagine I just need a place to hide away?

You cannot satisfy them They creep across the land They want to be the only way Green fields are built upon Black towers rise above you Tinted windows darken every day So now we lock our doors And though we carry phones Isolated sheep don't understand Clubs replaced by media Society's been put on hold Suckling at the state to hold our hand It's not your place to have a care Decide what makes the measure of a man To see the world as black as you do I hope that given time you'd understand I hope you're listening Don't ever let them in At the borders just turn them away And as they stand before you They've given everything Just to give you the chance to say You're not welcome here Your kind are just rapists and thieves We need the balls to say It's not OK to get in here Think you're the same as me? It's not your place to have a care Decide what makes the measure of a man To see the world as black as you do I hope that given time you'd understand That by the time they got here They carry the weight of the world Can't you see you're parcelling dirt To sell to the dregs of the earth You sicken me Shouldn't be so quick to judge, then you said to me; "I'd let them fall from the globe or drown at sea I don't care where they go if they go from here I struggle to see why I'd care if they die It's not like their problems are mine if you let me decide!" There's a place Far from here That we won't see In the back of a truck Where they can't breathe And you lay the blame

Guarded Eyes 05:09
The sun was brighter yesterday My step was lighter in the pouring rain No need to say sorry But I've blown it with each word I said And I've been waiting for 23 years and 6 days You said you'd be back so I never changed I kept our skateboard, and your memory remains Standing on the pavement in the rising sun Your life was over But mine had just begun And I'm half a world away from you Help me see your love The sky's so cruel It looks like rust And I'm struggling to see a better a life When you look at me with those guarded eyes I learned to hold a grudge And love unconditionally Though these memories won't budge I don't recall your name And with each passing change Nothing remains the same And now I've lost your face I guess it melts away now I never thought I'd left you here Move on that old chain link fence Move on that old forsaken tree We always said there'd be another day tomorrow But you lied to me, broken in your sorrow Your tomorrow came yesterday I wish you'd breathe again Help me see your love The sky's so cruel It looks like rust And I'm struggling to see a better a life When you look at me with those guarded eyes

4am on the northern line Tore me away from what I like Thieves on the train took the time To turn on me like it was some surprise I don't know why I know what I know But I know you weren't born this way I dream of a world that is pure and kind Dream of a trust where we can speak our mind Trust it died so long ago It's a crime I can't ignore So I'm holding a mirror up to the world Addled with lust for riches and pearls It's a crime I can't ignore Can't you see it's true that Who you choose to be is frightening I just don't understand you any more It's like you're not real The games that we played have been over for so long The scream of joy that lifted me was overcome By the world crashing down on our heads We were too busy to see We were running from ourselves Crawling away from the town we grew up in Following words of a world that knows nothing I don't know what I'm expected to do I don't know what I expected of you Crying at the slip of a tongue it meant nothing Holding a wake for your heart is quite something I don't know how I put up with you I don't know how I'd be lost without you Holding some truth that is no surprise I lost it so long 'til it sounded like lies 'til you crushed my world and buried my song Stringing me, I just wanted some more Verses that gloat in my heart every time Plucking at lives in my life, intertwined I don't know what I expected of you I don't know what I expected but Who you choose to be is frightening In my dreams I barely see you any more I'm right here! I'd show you each word that I said wrong I'd take you by the hand, but you're long gone My ambitions are slain by the damage I've done to myself Who you choose to be is frightening to me With the rising of the sun In a world that feels so young You expect that you remain But you're here and then you're gone

about

Part 1 was about the journey.

Part 2 is closer to my own experience. It's the other side of the coin, the other side of the journey, the other side of the ocean.

The destination.

How do we judge them? The people that risk it all, leave everything behind? How do we see them? Can we see ourselves in their stories? Shared humanity? Or are they the "other", something to fear?

This EP is how I feel about how the news reports it all. It's the endless headlines stoking fear and hatred. It's the mind of a nationalist who wants revenge on immigrants for the acts of terrorists. It's the despair of the refugee who can't ever call this place home, where the natives glance at them sideways as they pass in the street.

It's my memory, aged 7, of leaving my life behind when my family moved to the other side of the world.

It's a walk under the run down tower blocks councils ram with migrants. Being mugged on the train. Katie Hopkins calling them Cockroaches, The Prime Minister talking about a swarm coming over here. We're all humans, we choose how we treat each other. We choose who we are. And who we choose to be is frightening to me.
