I fall, you bring me down I need to be the only sound Out here in this barren place You never listen to a word I say And I walk an open road But nothing is free, so something is owed And if you don't know you're never told So you go, you go To an open field, are you satisfied That they feel so proud and the walls are high My heart is breaking, I can't see the light in here I see that my world's obscene We need someone to laugh and someone to weep And only in the fire the cycle's complete So you just let go, you just let the world Swallow you when they shatter the sky 'Cause your life's complete and your walls are high If you question the world you will never get old So you don't, you don't go To an open field, are you satisfied That they feel so proud and the walls are high Though morning's breaking out I can't see the light It's gone from here In an open field They will spend their life Holding out their hope Longing for the time In the silent dawn They will cross the line To a brighter place They can call their home Is there light before the dawn Light before the dawn Though morning's breaking out I can't see the light It's gone from here But I can't leave

From day one we knew you'd make it big Like a cancer you snuck into everything We fed you, helped you into your disguise And with somber words we watched your madness rise Your foolish pride, demented angel You wait, you wait, changing lines on the map again You watched in spring you helped them die They were thorns in your side 'til they broke away from life Gaddafi was weak, thought that oil would make them smile But there's bears in the desert and nobody wants a fight Your foolish pride, demented angel You wait, you wait, changing lines on the map again And why does it seem that we keep arriving here If war is your dream we were forged in the fire, fuck dignity (Even though they fear you) It's getting harder to (Keep them in line) Drop bombs on you (You cannot betray your kind) And calling you out just entrenches you in (And you might sin) That's no way to win It's just a sad way to end the story Your foolish pride, demented angel You break, you wait, changing lines on the map again If all of your dreams won't change anything Then why can't we leave and begin again You foolish man, you've paid the price You've been deserted by your tribe So king of sand and empty lands You have lost the forces you command

Desert Waves 05:28
Lonely 'til the night the desert comes alive And the trafficker's been waiting for you To cast you from your shore You give but they want more And now desert waves are breaking on these endless shores I see Everything looks different now you've broke away, you're free But nothing is getting closer to me So just stop now! (no don't judge me) You know you can't imagine what I've lost now! (on this desert sea) It's like you don't see what everybody else can! Weakened by the sight of old trails come to life Veins of sharp humanity are riding desert waves An endless shore so strange It cuts but then it saves Only if you're strong enough to ride the storm unseen Only if you're brave enough to face the wars you leave But I don't think I'm going back there So just stop now! (no don't judge me) You know you can't imagine what I've lost now! (an endless dream) It's like you don't see what everybody else can! When it's all been said and done I'm hanging on to you From the damage we must run I'm so determined not to waste this chance to realise My own potential In my home I'm terrorised On this trail I am Victimised Do you even realise How I'm damaged on the way To a safer world where I can stay (No don't judge me) I know you can't imagine what I've lost now! (on this desert sea) Well everything seems empty on this desert sea! (No don't judge me) I know you can't imagine trusting me! (in this endless dream) It's like you don't see what everybody else can! On a cold and rusty shore Some fire's burning inside you And burning up the things you left behind When you travel from your life Are you braver than those you leave behind? Scattering your ashes far and wide...

The Storm 03:46
Heavy seas on this long journey Hear the thunder rise See the clouds in the turbulent sky It's night but the sea is green I'm starting to be terrified The sky has been electrified In the light of the dark, in the heat of the day I could be the storm that you see Watching your eyes In the ocean a spark, I will snuff out your ark You will be forgotten how strange Open your eyes And you'll be forgotten how strange In the light I could have made And you scream to be saved From the life I created And only you, and you alone Will find a castle far from home Even when you see my eyes Sarcastic evil trapped inside And for my crime They see to it you must drown

Your face is inscrutable but the message is clear I can search but you're no longer here You are some thankless warrior I am given to fear And my feet go where my fear must lead And you know that I can't fight The things that we build in our minds It's all I can do not to love you It was all you could do not to die Now I disappear You can search but I'm no longer here The cities we built have been stolen And I'm far from here As a child insufferable I was driven to tears By a light that was brilliant but brief Every time I saw the way you were I was broken With a word capsized and the fire in your eyes was gone So now I disappear You can search but I'm no longer here The cities we built have been stolen And I'm far from here And you know that I can't fight The things that we build in our minds It's all I can do not to love you So the message is kept in my mind So now I disappear You can search but I'm no longer here The storm we were made in has broken The streets that we played in have cleared Now I disappear Now I disappear Now we've gone from here

Took an early morning drive Back of nowhere Dust from the capital still burned into my hair I flew through the night Though it took me half my life To make the outward journey Since I lost my starting line But I'm searching for you Oh, brother of mine! I've come home for you now I turned myself around To see the strength in your eyes And feel like something good has happened I have shown you I never let you go Settled in familiar streets These feet much younger ran Changing places disagree Streets drift like desert sands Did you have to go? I search for you now and then 20 years abandoned us But here I must return But I've come home for you now I turned myself around To see the strength in your eyes And feel like something good has happened I have shown you I never let you go In my heart you'll see we could have anything Why chase a time that's come to an ending? We'll laugh and cry and trade our memories One taste, that's all we get of anything It's so hard to... to savor it But I've come home for you now I turned myself around To see myself in your eyes And feel like something good has happened I can show you I never let you go

about

The brave new millennium turned into 9/11. Decades of economic progress turned into the great recession. And in turn, the Arab spring turned sour. Libya in flames, ISIS spreading like a patch of bramble out of northern Iraq and Syria, which was engulfed in a bloody civil war.

These songs were written in the summer of 2015. When the refugee crisis hit the headlines, we saw the rickety boats in the Med, the waves of humanity seeking safety as they ran from whatever horrors they'd left behind. My reaction was shock and sorrow, but I heard a lot of voices reacting in revulsion and anger - they were angry with the refugees! I learned something dark about the society I live in.

This is Part 1, it tells the imagined story of a refugee who has to flee their country, leave everything behind. They make it to safety, losing friends on the way. Years later, they travel home and begin to process all they lost.

Recorded late 2015 in a lockup room at Robannas Studios in Birmingham.

Backing Vocals from Stu Hope, Rosie Lack, Alex Thomson, Stu Thomson & Hannah Watson
